A manhunt is underway for a suspect who fled the scene of shootout with police that left four suspects dead in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.

The suspects were shot and killed in Adams Mission, south of Durban.

According to police, the group was wanted in connection with a number of crimes committed in the area.

"We identified them on Sheleni Road. Police used sirens as usual and during that operation, there was a confrontation and a shootout ensued. Four suspects were shot and fatally wounded. One of them managed to escape, so a search for him is underway,” said police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.

He said police will run ballistics on the two firearms recovered from the scene.

"You don't have a gun for fun, but you've got a gun because you've got an intention to shoot. We are still linking them with other cases and now that we've got firearms, we are taking them for ballistic to see if this gun can be linked to any cases of murder or any other cases committed."
