Evidence presented before the Madlanga Commission of inquiry suggests that criminally accused tender tycoon Vusimuzi “cat” Matlala attempted to use his proximity to a Gauteng cop to get intel on a murder case.
Evidence leader, Matthew Chaskalson, has been unpacking WhatsApp messages between witness F, a member of Gauteng organised crime, and Matlala.
In one of the messages, Matlala sent a Mamelodi case number to witness F.
Witness F responded by sending Matlala a screen-grab of saps’ internal cas (pronounced caz) system, which records details of cases.
The witness claims Matlala told him the case related to an employee who was the victim of a domestic violence dispute.
Chaskalson details what the case actually entailed.
"This case 157/03/2024 involved the murder of Kabelo Richard Mathe, who was murdered outside a forum house in Mamelodi Sector One, and at a crime scene where 50 cartridges were found. There was no private complainant at all. The complainant was the constable to whom it was reported."
Chaskalson outlines what he believes the reasons for Matlala querying the matter.
"I put it to you that this looks very much like a case in which Mr Matlala’s query was made on behalf of the perpetrator and not on behalf of the victim."
