Social grant activist Elizabeth Raiters urged the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to tighten its grant review and payment processes.

The social security agency said 400,000 beneficiaries have already been notified to come forward for reviews.

So far, 240,000 grants have been reviewed, and about 70,000 grants were suspended after beneficiaries failed to complete the process.

Raiters said many beneficiaries were caught off guard due to poor communication.

She said elderly grant recipients were often unaware that they were due for review and stood to lose their only source of income.

"I feel like last year they targeted the old people and a lot of old people went for months without their Sassa grants. I also think Sassa can do better with letting beneficiaries know before payday that they are up for review," Raiters said.
