Chaos erupted at the Doornkop Community Hall in Soweto on Friday during a public meeting hosted by Joburg MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso.
Members of the National Social Ills Group disrupted the proceedings, accusing the MMC of repeatedly failing to deliver on housing promises.
The disruption began when members of the organisation walked onto the stage while Mabaso was engaging the public regarding applications for RDP houses in the area, shouting at him.
The situation escalated as other community members attempted to push the activists out. JMPD officers intervened to separate the groups, who had begun getting physical, pushing one another, and hurling insults at those reprimanding them for disrupting the meeting.
Motshidisi Shao, a member of the National Social Ills Group, stated they have a responsibility to hold Mabaso accountable for not delivering houses to people who have been waiting since 1996.
"We are not fighting, we are simply asking what the use of a C-form is when people don’t have houses after 29 years," Shao said. "We are also questioning why he keeps hosting these engagements without giving us actual results."
One person suffered a leg injury after being pushed out of the hall and has been transported to a nearby hospital.
The group has since been moved outside the hall, and the meeting is continuing.
