New funding model for SABC not ready yet: Malatsi

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi says a new funding model for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is not ready yet.

He says the department can’t brief parliament publicly about which options it is working on due to the sensitivity of the process.

One of the plans to overhaul the SABC’s funding model is the introduction of a household levy instead of a TV licence.

The department is expected to finalise its plan by the end of this month.

“It is not a common request for engagements to be closed, but it is done solely in the interest of safeguarding an incomplete process from becoming the source of unnecessary engagement externally so that the team can have the space to finish that work,” Malatsi said.
