Rand Water has raised concerns over what it says is high water usage in Gauteng, especially in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
The utility says current consumption levels are exceeding allocated volumes and continue to strain the overall water supply network.
It adds that demand is putting the system under pressure and stretching infrastructure capacity.
Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says after talks with high water-consuming municipalities, the entity will reduce water supply to some areas to stabilise the bulk water supply system.
