The Eastern Cape Health Department has activated its emergency and outbreak response protocols following the death of two children from suspected food poisoning.

Authorities reported that six children from Msintsi location near Berlin and one child from NU3 in Mdantsane were admitted to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital on Saturday.

The children, aged between 4 and 7, reportedly presented with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Information from parents indicates that the six children from Mdantsane had been playing together and ate chips before falling ill, while the circumstances surrounding the child from NU3 are still unclear.

Department spokesperson Camagwini Mavovana said that investigations have been launched.

“The district environmental health unit has been deployed to investigate the source of the illness. The department extends its deepest condolences to the affected families and continues to provide clinical and psychosocial support. Further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available,” said Mavovana.
