Parts of Joburg CBD still in the dark after Bree substation fire

Johannesburg City Power said that it is conducting mop-up operations in the city's CBD following a fire at the Bree Substation.

The Substation blew up in the early hours of Friday morning causing power outages in the area.

City Power said that it will have to dismantle the damaged transformer and clear out hundreds of litres of oil.

It said that technicians are investigating the cause of the fire

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that the area remains without power.

"The team will also test two stand by transformers to ready them for use and also test the cables that will be swung to the new transformers so that we can then start the process of restoring electricity. With the debris gone our technicians will be able to determine the cause of the fire."
