Severe flooding continues to hit residents in Overstrand following territorial overnight rainfall.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that rainfall of up to 185 mm was recorded in some areas.

Residents in Hawston were forced to evacuate on Sunday night, while emergency efforts continue in Gansbaai on Monday

Many roads and stormwater systems remain damaged and closed due to unsafe road surfaces, and some areas are experiencing electricity outages following lightning strikes, said Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill.

“In some areas [the water] it was about hip high, and Hawston is an old township, so there are a number of elderly people staying there as well.”

A Level 4 thunderstorm warning remains in place for the Overstrand area, with an increased risk of mudslides and localised flooding.

“The rain seems to have subsided a bit, which we are grateful for because it allows the water to run down to the sea. But we are expecting more rain… we are not out of the woods yet.”

O’Neill called on residents to report incidents responsibly and to check the municipality's Facebook page for updates.
