Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and announce a permanent replacement when he addresses the nation in Parliament on Thursday evening.
Maimane says the country’s politics need an urgent reset, and the President needs to be more decisive about crime and corruption to restore integrity to the justice system.
Outlining his expectations for the State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament on Tuesday, Maimane said this is “zero hour” for the country, and there should be a break from business as usual.
BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane is not confident that Thursday night’s SONA will be more than a reshuffling of paragraphs from previous speeches. He says South African politics is trapped in old ways.
"Let’s introduce a new set of politics. Let’s re-occupy the centre. Let’s work with parties that share the centre."
Maimane says President Ramaphosa needs to draw a hard line against politicians who are involved in corrupt dealings; otherwise, commissions of inquiry hold no value.
"The police are trying to do their best, but how do you do your best when it seems like your leaders are not interested in protecting citizens, but they [are] interested in protecting themselves."
Maimane says Ramaphosa needs to deliver a proper assault against crime on Thursday evening if criminals are going to be stopped from running the country.
