The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called out bulk water supplier Rand Water for blaming residents for high consumption.

The party was briefing the media in Johannesburg about steps to end the water crisis that has led to several protests across the metro.

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga is joined by Stephen Moore, Helen Zille and Cilliers Brink.

While the DA briefed the media, residents from Melville, Westdene and Parktown continued their protest.

They said they’ve had water supply problems for a month now.

Earlier this week, Rand Water said the issue is the high consumption of water that has led to the shortage residents are currently facing.

This, while City of Johannesburg officials denied any threat of a day zero.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mayor Dada Morero told residents that they are looking for more permanent solutions to the crisis.

Msimanga said this is nothing new.

“The residents cannot be blamed for the incompetence; they cannot be blamed for the lack of proper planning. What we are now seeing from a provincial point is a response by government to say they are now introducing an intergovernmental relations, where they are working with municipalities”

He said this is not a new plan, adding that when it was implemented two years ago, it yielded no results.
