The families of apartheid-era victims have accused former presidents Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki of being disrespectful for instituting legal battles against the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) inquiry.

The commission began its work on Wednesday with opening statements from the parties involved.

It is investigating allegations of political interference and elaborate attempts to delay or impede the prosecution of TRC cases.

Last month, a recusal application by the former presidents failed, but today the commission heard that Zuma has approached the High Court and Mbeki intends to do the same.

They want the commission’s chair, retired Justice Sisi Khampepe, to recuse herself, accusing her of bias.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved families, Lukhanyo Calata believes these applications are intended to obstruct the work of the commission.

"It just basically shows really what Mbeki and Zuma actually think of us. So, Mr Mbeki and [Mr ] Zuma, they became presidents because our loved ones here laid down their lives for this democracy," Calata said.

Hlekani Rikhotso, sister to Ignatius Mthebule, who disappeared in 1987, says she is surprised by Zuma’s resistance.

"I for one, I know that President Zuma knew my brother in person; surely he would be interested in knowing what happened to him. I am surprised that he is one of the people who are delaying or refusing to come," Rikhotso said.
