Residents in several northern suburbs will take to the streets of Melville in Johannesburg to protest over prolonged water outages.

The affected areas include Melville, Westdene, Parktown West and Emmerentia.

The areas are supplied by the Johannesburg Commando System, which has been facing challenges to match demand with supply.

Melville resident Lizz Meiring said it’s been almost a month since they have had water in their taps.

Johannesburg Water said that its reservoir is running low due to leaks and water pipe breakdowns.

Meiring said she will be joining the protest calling for officials to account.

“We've been gaslit, we've been lied to, we've been misinformed, we've not been informed and everything cannot be blamed on an old infrastructure because we have video evidence of water gushing down the streets in this area, as well where simply pipes had burst that had been reported often more than a year ago and have not been fixed.”
