Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina has called on residents of Johannesburg and the rest of Gauteng to remain patient as authorities work to resolve the ongoing water crisis affecting the province.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, the minister acknowledged the challenges faced by communities experiencing water supply disruptions and assured residents that efforts are underway to restore stable services.
Without providing specific details, Majodina emphasised that coordinated interventions are being implemented to address the issues affecting water supply and to ensure long-term stability across Johannesburg and Gauteng.
“We are attending to their challenges. We are going to develop a clear plan on the turnaround in terms of interventions and the time it’s going to take, so that we can restore water on time. All inconveniences that have been caused are highly regrettable.”

Gauteng implements soft water restrictions to prevent system collapse
Meanwhile, Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister David Mahlobo said soft water restrictions will be implemented across the several provinces that already have water.
This, he said, will boost provinces that are compromised and prevent a total system collapse.
The restrictions will be implemented in Gauteng, parts of Mpumalanga and the North West and they will be done on the main Rand Water system and not only Joburg Water.
Flanked by Majodina and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi along with other officials, Mahlobo told reporters that load shifting will be implemented at reservoirs with sufficient water.
This means water will be redirected from these reservoirs to those that don’t have water to stabilise the system.
“There is going to be a soft water restriction, the soft water restriction will only apply in the areas where the system is already applying water, they are going to be put on restriction. We'll also do something called load shifting...”
