Indonesia says it is training some 8,000 troops in preparation for deployment to Gaza as part of the ceasefire deal agreed to last year.

It makes the country the first to publicly commit forces to the proposed mission.

“They're currently being trained to join what will be a new stabilisation force in Gaza," explains Pacific Dispatch correspondent Katie McDonald.

The move forms phase two of the arrangement brokered by the United States late last year.

"That's part of the Stabilisation Force, which will fall under the Board of Reconstruction," explains McDonald.

US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace has a United Nations Security Council mandate which would focus on border security and demilitarisation measures, including disarming Hamas.

It is also expected to support the establishment of a Palestinian administration and to oversee elements of the rebuilding of Gaza.

"It's one of the few countries to take up the invitation to join this Board of Peace, which not all countries have been invited to join."
