A stellar performance by South Africa against the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday secured a spot in the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup.
Aiden Markram’s side walked away with a six-wicket win, with 40 balls remaining, to extend their unbeaten streak in the tournament.
The next phase of the tournament will see the Proteas take on India, the West Indies, and Zimbabwe in group one of the last eight.
The second group consists of England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals.
Fredericks explained that the tournament really starts now for the Proteas as the pressure intensifies.
He noted that the team has a lot of work to do, especially with a crucial match against India on Sunday, which could set the tone for their push towards the semi-finals.
He highlighted the importance of the team’s batting and bowling performance, noting that they will need to be clinical and ruthless to overcome India.
“When you get to these stages of the tournament, especially Super 8s against India, one dropped chance, one misfield, one bad decision, and you are in trouble.”
With a big home crowd expected on Sunday, Fredericks emphasised the need for the team to stay sharp and show proper intent to win the trophy.
“They have got to be on top of their game. It has got to be a 100% bowling effort, a 100% batting effort and a 100% fielding effort because India will also be coming in all guns blazing.”
