Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket.

Van der Dussen carved out a reputation as a steady and reliable stroke maker at the top and middle order over the 7 years in which he represented his country and played in 18 Tests, 71 ODIs and 57 T20 Internationals for South Africa, scoring close to 5000 runs across all 3 formats.

“It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from International Cricket. To wear the Proteas jersey is a feat that demands a level of resilience and dedication that both tests and rewards you in the most incredible way. To have played for my Country has been the greatest honour of my life,” said Van der Dussen in a statement posted on his social media pages.

Considered a late bloomer, Van der Dussen made his international debut in a T20 match against Zimbabwe in 2018 at the age of 29 after many seasons played in the thankless domestic, where he was a model of consistency.

Soon after, he became a regular feature of both the red-ball and white-ball teams and a respected member of the dressing room.

Van der Dussen last played for the Proteas in the T20 series in Australia back in August 2025. He was under a national hybrid contract with Cricket South Africa at time, and his omission from the list of contracted players for the 2026/27 season implied he was no longer under consideration for selection.

“To the people of South Africa and the fans; thank you. There is no feeling quite like hearing ‘MaThousand’ called out in the streets, or the spine-tingling experience of walking out to bat at a packed Wanderers Stadium to the deafening roar of Antibiotika. Those moments of connection is difficult to describe, and those emotions will stay with me forever,” said Van der Dussen.
