A 20-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with a mass shooting that left nine people dead in Philippi East.

Armed men reportedly opened fire at an illegal liquor outlet in the Marikana informal settlement in January.

Authorities believe the attack is connected to ongoing extortion activities in the area.

Police Spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala said the latest suspect was arrested at his home in Lower Cross Road, Philippi East, shortly after midnight on Friday.

"The members descended at the suspect’s home in Lower Cross Road. They found the 20-year-old male in possession of four cellular telephones which were confiscated and handed in as evidence."
