ActionSA’s mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration, vowing to tackle the issue head-on in the city if elected.

Mashaba was announced as the party’s candidate at Orlando Community Hall in Soweto on Saturday.

He previously served as the mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019 and was also ActionSA’s candidate in the 2021 local government elections.

In his acceptance speech, Mashaba leaned into ActionSA’s national ideology.

Mashaba said if he is elected, he will deal with illegal immigrants in the city.

“Undocumented illegal foreign nationals who operate outside our laws - you want me to repeat this, so that’s its very clear - undocumented foreign nationals who operate outside our laws will not be welcome in a city we lead.”

Mashaba said under his leadership, business support initiatives and trading opportunities would be reserved exclusively for South Africans and legal permanent residents.
