Tempers flared at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry during the fifth day of testimony by suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya.
The friction intensified as Sibiya continued to testify regarding his relationship with his subordinate, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi. Nkosi stands accused of acting as a middleman between Sibiya and alleged criminal tender tycoon, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
CONFRONTATION WITH COMMISSIONER BALOYI
On several occasions, Sibiya took issue with the line of questioning from Madlanga Co-Commissioner, Advocate Sesi Baloyi. He accused her of attempting to coerce him into making specific admissions.
During the exchange, Sibiya addressed the Commissioner directly:
"Commissioner Baloyi, I’m trying to be fair to you as well, as you are the person that’s here to ask me questions on probe—I must respond. But I’m just asking one favour: that when you ask me a question, allow me to respond and finish as well."
However, Baloyi remained firm, asserting her authority and denying any attempt to unfairly influence Sibiya’s testimony.
"And you can keep complaining about me," she retorted. "I will ask you my questions."
"THE CAT IS OUT OF THE BAG"
The atmosphere grew even more strained when Sibiya sparred with Evidence Leader Advocate Adila Hassim. The disagreement followed a quip from Hassim regarding impalas that were allegedly purchased by Matlala and delivered to Sibiya’s residence.
The verbal sparring unfolded as follows:
Sibiya: "I take it that the cat is already out of the bag."
Hassim: "Like the impalas?"
Sibiya: "You see? I don’t want to say she is being arrogant."
Hassim: "I was just making a joke."
Sibiya: "No, but you started it. Chair, we need to really respect each other and try to be modest with one another in a platform like this, and be professional."
The commission continues to probe the depth of the relationship between high-ranking police officials and the controversial "Cat" Matlala.
