City of Ekurhuleni has been plunged into further political instability following the resignation of Finance MEC Jongizizwe Dlabathi.

EWN understands Dlabathi is also resigning as the African National Conress (ANC)’s regional secretary following a reported fallout with the regional chairperson, Ekurhuleni Mayor, Doctor Xhakaza.

The pair held a media briefing last Friday, where they assured the residents of Ekurhuleni that the city was stable.

However, over the past week, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has pulled out of the ANC-led coalition government in the city, with ActionSA also refusing offers to join.

EWN has seen Dlabathi’s resignation letter, which he sent to the office of the ANC’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula.

He is stepping down not only as Finance MMC but also as the ANC’s regional secretary, a position he had long aspired to hold.

Dlabathi's resignation comes just hours after Xhakaza announced new appointments to the mayoral committee, leaving the 10-member structure with another vacancy.

In his resignation letter, Dlabathi explained that stepping down was in the best interests of the ANC in the region and its smooth functioning.
