Authorities are investigating a suspected rabies outbreak among the seal colony at Duiker Island in Hout Bay.

Two seals have been removed from the area over the past week, including one following an incident with kayakers last Saturday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)’s Andrew Ingram is urging bathers not to approach seals, either in the water or on land.

"We encourage swimmers and paddlers to buddy up, use visible safety gear and make use of the NSRI SafeTracks app."
