It can help build confidence, reduce anxiety, and manage nerves and anxiety on the day of the event.
She recommended practicing breathing techniques and visualisation techniques to regulate your breath and focus on the present moment.
“You are feeling everyone else’s nerves. At that start line, when you feel those nerves, name what they feel just so that your brain and your body have this connection. And it might not even be nerves; it might just be excitement.
“Slow that breath down at the start line, perhaps some box breathing, or just doing some visualisation… It just allows you to ground your senses and ground yourself,” she said.
Van der Westhuizen also advises riders to prioritise self-care and fuelling their bodies during the waiting period before the tour.
Stick to your usual pre-ride snacks and drinks to avoid feeling depleted.
“Make sure you are eating… You would have already burnt up the energy [from your breakfast] with your excitement, getting to the start line, it’s been two or three hours since you left the house.”
She also emphasises the importance of pacing oneself, especially when dealing with cramping, punctures, and other challenges that may arise during the tour.
