The Ekurhuleni Council has officially filled its vacant presiding seat following a decisive vote on Thursday.

John Senona, representing the African Transformation Movement (ATM), has been elected as the new Speaker of the Council.

In a head-to-head contest, Senona secured the position by defeating the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Nkululeko Dunga.

The final tally reflected a significant margin of support for the ATM representative:

John Senona (ATM): 94 votes

Nkululeko Dunga (EFF): 33 votes

The speaker’s position became vacant last week after the resignation of Dora Mlambo.

Her departure followed a strategic shift in the city’s executive, as she was appointed the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Infrastructure and Development.

In his acceptance speech, Senona expressed his commitment to the decorum and functionality of the legislative body.

He said that he will do his best to ensure the work of the Council operates smoothly and effectively under his leadership.

“Fellow councillors, democracy will always involve robust debate, differing political views – that’s the nature of democratic governance, but our differences must never come at the expense of the dignity of this institution. As the speaker, I commit to preside over this council with fairness, impartiality and firm adherence with the legislation and the standing orders that guide us.”
