The City of Cape Town said its latest anti-corruption sting sends a clear warning - bribery will not be tolerated.
A 51-year-old suspect has been arrested after allegedly attempting to pay a R1.4 million bribe to the City Manager, Lungelo Mbandazayo.
The money was reportedly offered in exchange for help securing municipal contracts and stopping internal investigations.
Instead of accepting the payment, Mbandazayo alerted police and assisted in an undercover operation at Watercress Mall in Somerset West on Wednesday.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Thursday, after officers seized the cash, along with a vehicle and a cellphone during the arrest.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has commended the city manager’s actions, describing him as a public servant residents can be proud of.
The mayor said the operation proves the city is serious about rooting out fraud and corruption.
"I congratulate City Manager Lungelo Mbandazayo for his participation in a SAPS [South African Police Service] and City of Cape Town sting operation that led to the arrest of a corrupt businessman. I thank him sincerely for his bravery."
Police investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are expected.
