Ekurhuleni firefighters are working to contain a fire that broke out at an auto spares shop in Edenvale.

Two fire service personnel sustained injuries during operations.

It is believed the fire started around 11:00 on Tuesday morning.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police have closed off Van Riebeeck Road in Edenvale, where motorists are being diverted away from the busy route. There is a heavy presence of private security, emergency services, and Ekurhuleni Metro Police, all of whom are attending to the scene.

Thick smoke can still be seen rising from the roof of the shop, which caved in earlier after the fire burned through it.

An Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson said that while private firefighters were attempting to assist with the blaze, a wall collapsed on them, injuring two individuals.

"They are suffering from lower body injuries due to the wall falling on top of them. We don't know exactly the intensity of that, but they are in stable condition," the spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
