The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is encouraging South Africans between the ages of 18 and 25 to register on the voters' roll.
The commission held a voter education campaign at the Durban University of Technology’s Ritson campus on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, it held a briefing on its readiness for the upcoming local government elections.
In 2024, the IEC reported that the country’s youth made up only 42% of the voters’ roll.
Provincial electoral officer Ntombifuthi Masinga addressed students at the event.
"It is very important that we have you today because you have a bigger responsibility of encouraging your peers to participate in the processes," Masinga said.
Masinga encouraged the youth to show interest in leadership roles even at government level.
"We are not looking at young people as voters only," she added.
