There’s some relief on the horizon for Knysna residents battling municipal debt.
The Garden Route municipality has introduced a new incentive that could see qualifying households having up to half of their arrears wiped away.
To benefit, residents need to settle 50 per cent of what they owe by the 30th of June, after which the remaining balance will be cleared in full.
The relief applies to residential accounts with debt dating back to June last year that remained unpaid at the start of this year.

The Knysna municipality said the move is designed to give struggling households a financial reset while helping ease the pressure many residents are currently facing.
It said residents can make use of either a once-off payment or a structured short-term payment plan, depending on what they can afford.
Officials are encouraging residents to act quickly and get in touch with municipal offices in Knysna and Sedgefield to take advantage of the offer.
Knysna Executive Mayor Thando Matika said the initiative aims to strike a balance between supporting households in need and promoting responsible payment going forward.
