South Africa proved it has the market to compete on the global golfing stage with the success of a sold-out LIV Golf League at Steyn City.

Before the final round wrapped up on Sunday, the league announced that it would return in 2027.

OG Molefe, sports broadcaster and founder of the OG Molefe Foundation, explained that South Africa’s golf market is huge, evident by the large crowds the event drew on all four days.

The attendance of international stars such as Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm also drew in crowds.

“I think South Africans showed up in numbers because of the calibre of players we had. We’ve always punched above our weight in golf, but unfortunately, we don’t attract that level of golfers anymore.

“It’s huge for South Africa as a golf market. We’ve got a huge following, and people love the game,” he said.

He noted that the tournament’s success is a testament to the country’s passion for golf, which extends beyond the sport itself.

The event also included a concert featuring Black Coffee and international DJ Calvin Harris.

“It’s not just about the golf, it’s the entire experience. You’ve got the atmosphere, the music, and the entertainment. It’s a fantastic package.”
