Botha Sigcau building fire: Scramble for alternative workspace as probe continues

Botha Sigcau building employees are expected to be given alternative workplaces following the blaze that has since ravaged their place of employment.

It's been two days since the historic building was burnt, destroying government offices belonging to over 9 departments.

Till now, the cause of the inferno has yet to be established.

The Hawks have since taken over the case with seasoned investigators assigned to it.

Though it's been over 48 hours since the fire gutted the building, it still remains a hazardous place for investigators to work on site, as thick smoke can be seen billowing through from time to time.

And for this reason alone, authorities said it may take longer for the assessments to be conducted.

Authorities say the blaze has caused a service delivery backlog as departments cannot function.

Public works and infrastructure MEC Siphokazi Lusithi said head of departments and district directors will be consulting their workforces for alternative offices.

“The alternative accommodation we are opting for is purely government owned in this vicinity of Mthatha primarily and secondly, the rest of the OR Tambo region.”

At the same time, the affected workers will receiving counselling.
