Calls for the suspension of Tshwane Deputy Mayor Eugene Modise are mounting as opposition parties question the city’s failure to place him on suspension following corruption allegations.
About five months ago, an independent forensic investigation found Modise had unethically benefited from a company currently doing business with the metro.
However, Modise previously owned the company in question and claims he sold it just moments before he became a councillor in Tshwane.
The same company is among 22 others that scored an alleged irregular R2.9 billion security tender in 2022, which recently came under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
The R2.9 billion security tender was awarded to multiple companies to provide security services for some of the city’s properties and assets.
However, the tender was flagged as irregular twice before it was issued, but the companies involved took the city to court.
One of the 22 companies that was awarded the tender is Triotic Protection Services, from which Tshwane Deputy Mayor and Finance MMC Eugene Modise resigned and claims to have sold.
DA mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink said Modise must be given the boot.
"Can we please have an explanation from the mayor why Eugene Modise has not been suspended pending the outcomes of an investigation against him. It’s an important point for the council to understand. Is she protecting him from serious allegations that he’s benefitting from tenders in Tshwane?"
However, Modise insists he’s done nothing wrong and claims he wasn’t part of the alleged tender rigging.
