Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says medical records show that many children in South Africa live with brain damage after suffering injuries in car accidents.
Creecy is calling on parents who are travelling to various destinations during the Easter weekend to ensure their children are buckled up.

Avoid alcohol when driving
Always obey speed limits
Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy before travelling
Take regular rest breaks on long journeys

She was addressing the Easter road traffic campaign media briefing along the N1 highway in Kranskop as millions begin travelling to the province.
Creecy said motorists should also prioritise the safety of their little ones.
"One of the great tragedies of our country is the excessive number of children who have brain damage because when the car breaks suddenly, they fly through the windscreen of the vehicle. Please buckle up your children. Even if you have them on your lap, you will not be able to hold them if the vehicle breaks suddenly," said Creecy.
