Western Cape beefs up law enforcement ahead of Easter traffic surge

A surge in Easter weekend traffic is expected on major Western Cape routes from Thursday, prompting intensified law enforcement across the province.

More than 500 traffic officers have been deployed as part of the provincial government’s road safety efforts.

Authorities say the crackdown is already showing results.

Since the launch of the Easter Road Safety Campaign last week, 51 drunk drivers have been arrested, along with 63 others for serious offences.

Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says those arrested include a minibus taxi driver who allegedly knocked down a pedestrian on the N2 near Nekkies in Knysna and then tried to flee the scene. 

In a separate incident, a minibus taxi driver was arrested for drunk driving near Brackenfell while transporting people to work.

"We remain focused on removing high-risk behaviours while also improving safety and professionalism in the minibus taxi industry. We urge all road users to drive and walk responsibly, obey the law, and help us save lives."
