Super fan Mama Joy is clashing with Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie over a World Cup trip that she wants funding for.
Primedia+ Digital Content Editor Barbara Friedman chatted to CapeTalk's Sara-Jayne Makwala King about the request.
In June 2024, McKenzie said the government would no longer be funding the fans, said Friedman.
Instead, the money would go to athletes.
But with the World Cup coming up in the US, Canada and Mexico in June, Mama Joy recently posted that she would like to be there to support Bafana Bafana: "Am asking any help from any one to help me attend World Cup 2026 @GaytonMcK won't pay for fans especially Mamajoy".
McKenzie's social media retort was hilarious: "We got you your husband my sister, let him pay for the love of his life, the Euro is very strong. Frenchmen are known to be romantic, let him pay Sista Joy."
He was referring to Nicolas Pitaud, whom Joy 'Mama Joy' Chauke married in a traditional ceremony in 2024.
Mama Joy has since posted: "Let's just pray for the president to give us a new minister of sport that loves fans".
The social media comments are varied, with some saying she is exactly the kind of fan the team needs there. While others agree with the minister and say that if she wants to go, she should pay her own way. A few are also calling for other fans who have been saving their coins to get to the World Cup to be given a turn, said Friedman.
