The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has warned the public about the insurance risks linked to storing petrol at home.
The association said some consumers have begun storing large volumes of fuel amid uncertainty over future fuel supply.
Rising petrol and diesel prices have also contributed to the hoarding.

Technical expert for the association Mosidi Shomang said municipalities only permit up to 25 litres to be stored for the use of a lawnmower.
She added that insurers will not cover losses resulting from illegal or non-compliant activities.
“Storing fuel above local limits constitutes a breach of legislation. SAIA recommends avoiding the storage of petrol at home.”
The SAIA is urging the public to store no more than 25 litres of fuel, and to keep it in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources and electrical equipment.
