Tshukudu Malatji admits to being 'guilty' of collecting full salary during suspension

The Director of Tshwane’s Asset Protection Security (APS) unit, Tshukudu Malatji, testified before the Madlanga Commission on Thursday, revealing that he has been earning a full salary for ten months while on suspension.

Malatji has been sidelined from his post since July last year. He faces charges related to his alleged failure to declare all his business interests and a failure to penalise underperforming service providers, oversights that reportedly led to significant financial losses for the municipality.

As the head of the APS unit, Malatji is responsible for the mandate to protect the City of Tshwane’s critical infrastructure sites.

However, the unit has faced intense scrutiny during the commission’s proceedings.

Allegations have surfaced regarding the awarding of security contracts to politically connected companies, a practice that has reportedly cost the city millions of rands.

During his testimony, Malatji expressed a sense of unease regarding his current employment status.

“I am sitting here, it’s almost ten months on suspension, getting a salary,” Malatji told the Commission. “I am very much guilty of getting paid for so long without doing anything to benefit the city or the community of Tshwane.”
