Police are remaining tight-lipped on details about the arrest of a senior Ekurhuleni municipal official.

EWN has learned the suspect is suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhanazi, who was arrested at his home on Saturday morning.

He faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice, and is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Mkhwanazi was arrested by the SAPS Madlanga task team, established by the president to act on evidence from the judicial commission of inquiry.

The police, in a statement, confirmed the operation was led by the team.

However, in a subsequent note, they said the charges are not linked to evidence from the Madlanga Commission, including the blue lights saga.

They also denied any connection to a probe by police watchdog IPID, which has been investigating Mkhwanazi over allegations tied to the 2022 killing of Emmanuel Mbense.

Police said more details will be shared on Monday.

Mkhwanazi is accused of using his position to benefit associates, including alleged crime figure Vusimuzi 'cat' Matlala.

Authorities said more arrests are expected.
