The state in the case against two senior Ekurhuleni officials is opposing their release on bail, but says it will provide reasons for its refusal at the next court appearance.
Ekurhuleni city manager Kagiso Lerutla and suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi made their first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
It is alleged that Mkhwanazi colluded to assist Lerutla in unlawfully sending someone to pose as him in court following a 2019 speeding arrest.
The state argues that this amounted to fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
Lerutla's lawyer, Zweli Zakwe, has slammed the NPA for enrolling the matter without having the correct facts.
