The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to place National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola on suspension amid his legal woes.

Masemola appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges linked to an irregularly awarded Medicare24 tender.

The 360 million rand tender was awarded to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, who has since been charged with fraud and corruption charges.

But Masemola has been charged with contravening the Public Finance Management Act.

The DA wants Ramaphosa to place Masemola on precautionary suspension and appoint a board of inquiry into his fitness to hold office
the party’s leader, Geordin Hill–Lewis.

"The national commissioner is about to appear in court on serious charges relating to improper tender awards to cat matlala. South Africa cannot afford question marks over the conduct of the country’s most senior police officer."
