A high-ranking police officer testifying in the trial of alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack said slain top cop Charl Kinnear did not trust the police.

Modack, along with 14 others, faces 122 charges, including the murder of Kinnear in 2020.

A police captain, who testified on Wednesday as a defence witness, told the Western Cape High Court he met with Kinnear and his superior, General Andre Lincoln, in January 2020, nine months before Kinnear's fatal shooting.

Witness for the defence, known only as "Mister F", said Kinnear was disgruntled after a dispute with his boss, Lincoln, following the removal of Kinnear's security detail, despite a botched hand-grenade attack at his home in 2019.

Mister F said Lincoln wanted Kinnear transferred from Mitchells Plain back to Sea Point after Kinnear refused to conduct a security assessment.

Mister F told the court Kinnear did not trust the police, particularly his colleagues in the Anti-Gang Unit, fearing they could invade his privacy and place him at risk.

Mister F said, "Your worship, he did not trust anybody."

"Even members of his own unit?" Judge Henney asked.

Mister F responded, "Even more especially, your worship."

The trial continues.
