Allegations of police corruption have again taken centre stage in the high-profile trial of suspected underworld boss Nafiz Modack.

The trial resumed in the Western Cape High Court last week after a two-month break, with South African Police Service (SAPS) captain Alfred Barker on the witness stand for the defence.

Barker told the court that in 2017, he investigated complaints from Modack against the now-deceased Mark Lifman, along with top cops Jeremy Vearey and the late Charl Kinnear, claiming they were conspiring against him.

Barker will be back in the witness stand on Monday to hear whether Modack's lawyer, Advocate Bashier Sibda, wants to re-examine him.

Last week, under cross-examination, Barker denied claims he instructed Modack to bribe senior police officers in a plot to expose them for corruption.

"Modack was never an informant for me. I never worked with Modack to say giving me information. Modack was just an ordinary complainant."

Barker also provided the court with evidence linking one of Modack’s cellphone numbers to a 2018 grenade attack on Kinnear.
