Authorities in the Western Cape are prepared to increase patrols on major routes across the province this long weekend, as forecasts predict a bout of wet and windy weather.
The provincial Mobility Department has confirmed that traffic officers will be deployed in full force to manage the influx of travellers. This proactive measure comes as the South African Weather Service issues warnings that heavy rain and wind could significantly reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions.
Maxine Bezuidenhout, a representative for the department, urged motorists to exercise extreme patience and adjust their driving habits to suit the conditions. She emphasised that road safety is a shared responsibility between those behind the wheel and those on foot.
"Avoid sudden braking and take extra caution around flooded areas. Pedestrians also have a role to play; wear visible clothing and only cross at safe, designated points," Bezuidenhout stated.
With the long weekend expected to bring high traffic volumes, the department’s message remains clear: safety depends on individual behaviour.
"Ultimately, road safety comes down to the choices we each make, so let’s look out for one another and keep Western Cape roads safe this weekend," Bezuidenhout added.
