A KwaZulu-Natal doctor accused of sexually harassing his patients will spend this long weekend behind bars following the adjournment of his case.

Syham Prabhakaran Nair made his first court appearance in the Madadeni Magistrates' Court in Newcastle on Thursday afternoon.

He faces four counts of sexual assault charges linked to the alleged abuse of women at the hospital where he works.

The case has been adjourned until next week for further investigations.

The accused doctor made a brief appearance before the magistrates, covering his face with a face mask as he made his way in the dock.

State prosecutor Advocate Thulisile Shabalala presented the state’s case.

“The accused is being charged by the state with four counts of sexual assault.”

Shabalala requested a postponement, saying there are outstanding investigations which they need to complete.

“Some of the bail investigations need to be conducted, and the state is requesting that the matter be adjourned.”

The prosecution has indicated that it will oppose bail in the matter.

The accused, Syham Prabhakaran Nair, will return to court next Friday.
