Firefighters battle raging blaze at Quarry Road informal settlement

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving blaze at an informal settlement on Quarry Road, near Reservoir Hills, north of Durban.

The fire has already destroyed scores of shacks, leaving dozens of residents displaced.

Heavy smoke and emergency activity have caused severe congestion near the M19, with people spilling onto the roadway motorists urged to avoid the area.

The KZN Human Settlements Department said that teams have been deployed to assist those left homeless with officials working closely with disaster management teams from the eThekwini municipality.

Department Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the fire is believed to have started in a rented shack.
