Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed proposals to give local government control over rail services in the draft national rail masterplan.
The plan released by transport minister Barbara Creecy for public comment aims to modernize the country's Railway system over the coming years.
Hill-Lewis said while the move to transfer rail control to municipalities is welcome - the draft does not outline when this will happen.
"Cape Town stands ready to be the first metro to run its local trains, but we are now calling for clear and urgent deadlines, given the urgent need for a working train system for all cape tonians," said Hill-Lewis
