Mdlalose had initially admitted to igniting the August 2023 fire that killed 76 people, but now insists his confession was a lie.
He told the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court that he fabricated the confession because he was homeless and believed prison would provide him with shelter.
Under cross-examination on Wednesday, Mdlalose said he did not want to remain in custody for a confession he claims was false.
"I wanted to find the right way to put this matter on the table. There were a lot of questions and a lot of people were confused, but I wanted the right time and place. So I just wanted the right words to use."
