Museum of Illusions has opened in Cape Town, adding a whole new sensory experience to the city's long list of attractions.

Sara-Jaye Makwala King chats to franchise owner Mark Collie on the day of the much-anticipated opening launch.

The city had been earmarked for the first museum in South Africa, but it was eventually launched in Johannesburg because an appropriate venue was so difficult to find in Cape Town in view of the necessary height and space requirements.

The venue offers over 60 visual and educational exhibits featuring holograms, stereograms, optical illusions, and immersive rooms that are designed to tease the senses and trick the mind.

The Joburg Museum of Illusions has already broken global attendance records since launching in July last year.

"We've seen incredible turnout from all ages, from all demographics - everyone seems to come there and have a great time, interacting with the exhibits and questioning reality."

Visitors include everyone from school groups to senior citizen groups.

Collie says he was inspired to secure the global franchise after visiting the Museum of Illusions in Dubai and finding he had as much fun as his kids did.

"Our key demographic is 18-35, but people of all ages come because everyone likes to go back to that moment of being curious and asking big questions about life and what's going on around us."

"The exhibits also give you an explanation from a scientific perspective, so there's an educational component attached to it, but more importantly it allows you to question everything."

The experience can be life-changing especially for school kids who are enthralled by the science behind it all, Collie adds.

It is advisable to book your visit to the Museum, as staff limit numbers to keep the experience a quality one.

The new Cape Town facility is located at number 10 Kloof Street in Gardens.

Each time slot is scheduled 20 minutes apart, but the average time spent there is 45 - 60 minutes.

Tickets start from R200 and specials can be expected once the Museum has settled after its launch period.
