DA's Breytenbach says Mkhwanazi should have approached Parly instead of press briefing

CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Justice spokesperson, Glynnis Breytenbach, believes KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, should have approached Parliament instead of addressing a press briefing dressed in police combat gear. 

Breytenbach said Mkhwanazi had other avenues to address his grievances regarding police corruption and interference, but a media briefing was not one of them. 

Breytenbach, who also sits in Parliament's ad hoc committee probing MKhwanazi's allegations, was speaking on the DA's podcast where the party's members of Parliament (MPs) discussed the ad hoc committee and the criminal justice system. 

Breytenbach will be one of the 18 MPs who will form part of the ad hoc committee that will investigate several allegations of corruption made by Mkhwanazi at a press conference four weeks ago.

While she wants Parliament to get to the bottom of Mkhwanazi's claims, she does not agree with how he chose to address the allegations. 

"He comes to the portfolio committee on police once a month. Why didn't he tell them about it? That was the appropriate space to raise it."

She added that the combat gear Mkhwanazi was donning was also inappropriate. 

"To come to a press conference with people in full combat gear with automatic weapons and wearing masks, that looks like a coup loading."

The ad hoc committee will meet for the first time on Tuesday, where Breytenbach and other members will elect a chairperson and start the investigation process.
