JOHANNESBURG - Demonstrators are staging a sit-in in Braamfontein outside the office of Joburg Mayor Dada Morero.
The Soweto residents, who are members of the Umphakathi Wesizwe organisation, are protesting against the slow allocation of RDP houses.
Some said that they'd been on the housing waiting list for almost 30 years.
The memorandum being handed to the Joburg mayor’s office calls for the speedy allocation of houses for applicants who’ve been waiting since 1996.
Protesters said that the applications of people who’d passed away before being given a house still needed to be processed.
They’re suggesting that hijacked buildings be repurposed for housing.
The group is demanding to meet with Mayor Dada Morero.
Their leader, Ernest Langa, explained: "We do not agree with meeting with the mayor’s officials because he was given enough time to talk to us, but now he does not want to attend to us."
He said that they would wait to speak to the mayor.
