Moms who have breastfed, or those currently doing it, know how much effort goes into pumping and storing milk.

This makes it all the more devastating when the milk goes to waste because of challenges with keeping it fresh.

This is where Milkset comes in, as the country’s first breastmilk freeze-drying service.

They turn breastmilk into a shelf-stable powder, without losing any of the nutrients.

“What you put in is what you get out.”

The freeze-dried milk does not need to be refrigerated and can be perfect for moms on the go.

The service costs R2,200 per free-drying cycles, which covers 5-6 litres of milk. This works out to about 40 feeds, and can last for 3-5 years.

When you’re ready to feed, all you need to do is add some water.

Geels says she was inspired to start this business after going on a family holiday while breastfeeding.

She had filled several cooler boxes with milk and dry ice, and was terrified of the milk defrosting and going to waste.

“You literally cry over spilt milk.”
